Driveway Concrete Calculator
By Vinod Kondeti · Updated
Driveways are large and thicker than patios, so the order is usually in whole truckloads of yards. Try different thicknesses: going from 4 in to 6 in on a 40 × 12 drive raises the order from about 5.9 to 8.9 yd³.
How do I measure for a driveway pour?
- Include the apron to the street as a separate slab if its width differs.
- Your contractor, plans or local requirements set the thickness. This page only does the volume.
- Ready-mix suppliers sell by the cubic yard, so round up your order.
Driveway concrete questions
How much concrete for a 40 × 12 driveway at 5 in?
40 × 12 × (5÷12) = 200 ft³ = 7.41 yd³ before waste.
Can I pour a driveway with bags?
It would take about 334 bags of 80 lb mix for 7.4 yd³. Bags are realistic for repairs and small pads, not a full driveway.
Bag yields: 0.30 / 0.45 / 0.60 ft³ for 40 / 60 / 80 lb standard concrete mix (manufacturer data sheets). The concrete guide has the formulas and worked examples.
